A thought for the day: In some situations, “Why not?” is a great question to ask yourself.
Why not?” is a liberating and expanding response that invites us to experiment, to step out of our usual (sometimes limiting) patterns, to be in the moment rather than constantly ruled by our self-imposed deadlines. It implies a certain light-heartedness that can help us take ourselves a little less seriously.
Admittedly, our “Why not?” actions carry the risk of not working out all the time, of not getting the outcome we hoped for. But if we develop the ability to hold ourselves with less judgment and more neutrality, we’ll be able to more easily try risky things that are out of our comfort zone. We’ll trust ourselves to handle our disappointment and move on.
“Why not?” isn’t the best response for all situations, of course. Wishing you could skip paying your taxes this year? Answering “Why not?” might have repercussions you’d rather not deal with down the road!
But, in many situations, “Why not?” is a great question to ask. Hockey player Wayne Gretzky said, “You miss 100 per cent of the shots you never take.”
Look for the next moment when this response will open you to an experience you might have otherwise backed away from, when you’re in a situation where you’d like to just go for it.
Give it a try. Why not?
