Creating an Imagined Future: How do you do it?

Posted On: Sunday, June 30, 2019

I have to say, being in a serious accident, is a great opportunity to re-look at all aspects of life.  Many people say, “Relax, you need to heal.”  Well that is true, and the focus of my attention has changed as I changed locations.

  • Hospital: They took care of me. Two operations and a little PT, and then I was off to rehab.
  • Rehab at Bethany Hill: This was 5 minutes from my house but seemed like a million miles away.  It  is a beautiful facility that mostly serves as a retirement home for nuns, but has 6 beds for rehab.
    • This was where I needed to work; orchestrating an environment where I could heal.
      • PT, OT: Learning how to dress, wash up, walk with a walker, and eat, write, and lead with my left hand.  They made me do it–reminding me that they were not coming home with me. Their lessons did, I left stronger then when I came with a new confidence that a full recovery was possible.
      • Food: Thanks to my step-son Mikey, husband Alan, and the flexibility of the facility, and the Caring Committee of the UUAC of Sherborn, I got food that was healthy and fit the diet I prefered.  There is nothing like enjoying a meal, many times in a com
        pany of a visitor.
      • Medications: For someone who never even takes an aspirin, I was put on a regiment of medication, mostly pain meds, and then a variety of other medications that counter-acted their effects.  The message: get off pain meds and the other part of the regiment would fall away.
      • People and Experiences that nurtured my heart, soul, healing process.   I can’t thank everyone enough–everyone who sent flowers, cards, food, and came for a visit.  Am so blessed to have had so much attention and love.  The staff at Bethany was gracious and helpful–by the time I was ready to go home–I was sad to go–appreciating their joyful presence and how that contributed to my healing.
  • Home: the third leg of the stool and maybe the most challenging.  I am back to an environment where I am not used to limitations.  In a way, it gives me incentive to work harder–as a result, I now walk around the house without a walker or cane–I am a walker.  I can make meals, go shopping, to the bank, and even to BNI.  Board meetings are scheduled here, and business groups as well.  We have a great new deck where I can sit outside andwatch the birds and have breakfast.
  • The challenge is to reassess my life and what I want to do on a daily basis.  This is the start of a new phase of life.  That is why I am tapping into 2 books that I have used a lot, Creating Money by Sanaya Roman and The EMyth Revisited by Michael Gerber.  The first one helps me to magnetize what I want, the second one gives me more direction around what I do want now for my life and my work.
