Why We Must Work to Make Our Dreams Come True

In recent years I have had to face my own issues of being too angry and impatient, especially with my two young boys. The first place I used to go when I had difficulty communicating was one of yelling and screaming.  I knew how blessed I was, being happily married, and having these bright, beautiful boys in my life. But I wanted to be happier, and I did not know how to get there.

I have been fortunate enough to have worked in the medical field and have been able to seek help for depression and anxiety. So when my younger child was about four months old, I realized that I was experiencing post-postpartum depression. I did not want my children to have to deal with my wrath along with the other challenges that childhood can bring. Once I began to obtain counseling and medication, I began to feel better.

Things began to improve within a few weeks. I was not nearly as impatient with my kids, and my depression had begun to ease. I was grateful that I had taken action.

Why am I sharing this with you? Because as an author,  coach, and mom, I have learned that  we have to obtain peace and happiness for ourselves in order to live our dreams. It is like the “chicken or the egg” scenario: To be happy, we need to work on living our dreams. To achieve our dreams, we must find peace. The two must go hand-in-hand.

It is my dream to work for peace within myself, my family, and my world. We need to WORK for peace, not just wait for someone (government, loved ones, a partner, etc.) to hand it to us. This does not have to be a nasty four-letter word either. In this case, it is the most liberating word I know.

Let me explain. When I was younger, I could not understand why I was so unhappy. I was convinced my happiness lay outside of myself — through perhaps a romantic relationship, a dream job, more money…as I detailed in my chapter of the best-seller A Juicy, Joyful Life (www.juicyjoyfullife.com). Once I got into my late twenties and began working on myself, I began to understand that it was MY job, and mine only, to give myself happiness. It had to be something that I decided to achieve. When I attempted to be happy by waiting for someone to come along like a fairy godparent waving a magic wand of happiness over me, all that happened is that I kept waiting.

Once I started working towards my own happiness, i.e. making my own dreams come true, I quickly discovered that just beginning the work was making me feel better. I began a more regular spiritual practice, ate healthier, went to bed at a decent hour, so I could feel better physically and emotionally. Then, I could work on my dreams by first discovering what they truly were.

I had to start by appreciating what I already had. As part of my spiritual practice, I  began to work with the Law of Attraction, which states that what we think about, we bring about. So through gratitude for the many gifts I already had, I could bring more good into my life. It didn’t take long to see that gratitude and appreciation REALLY work! The more I did this, the better I felt. My heart began to open up so that my gift of creativity started to flow. My dream, I discovered, was to help families create peace within themselves, their families, and their world also.

I have called myself a hippie for decades, because I am peace and love at my core. It is who I truly am, and when I go back to my childhood, I can remember feeling this way and wanting to  impact those around me.

With Peaceful Parents, my new business, I have been able to merge my lifetime passions of sharing peace, love, and wellness through coaching, writing and activism. I am finally living my truth–and that has resulted in living my dreams!
